TALKS & TEACHING

Special Series:

BLESS
BLESS
Blessed to bless those around us.
SPIRIT LED PEOPLE
UNITY IN DIVERSITY

Naturally Supernatural

The following is a suggested prayer structure. You can pick and choose which sections you would like to do. You can spend longer on the sections that are meaningful for you, but leave out others as time permits. Alternatively, feel free to do each one, which should take approximately 2½ or 5 minutes depending on whether you are praying for a total of 30 or 60 minutes. We do recommend that everyone do sections 6 and 7 each day (Praying Scripture and Intercession: Naturally Supernatural) as these form the main theme for the week’s prayer. You are also welcome to add any other prayer points you would like – let’s pray!

1. Praise and Worship

Spend some time praising God. Use songs, listen to music, speak out words of praise. You can find some worship songs to sing, or reflect upon by clicking here.

2. Pray in tongues

If you have the gift of tongues, use this now and allow the Holy Spirit to build you up (1 Corinthians 14:4). If you haven’t yet received this gift, you can spend a few minutes asking the Holy Spirit to give you this gift, or alternatively seek God’s blessing for your time of prayer.

3. Waiting on the Lord

Take some time to still your thoughts and sit before the Lord in silence. Ask him to reveal to you anything that is coming between you and Him.

4. Confession

Confess anything that comes to mind. This will enable you to pray without anything coming between you and God. If God highlights anyone He wants you to forgive, muster up the courage and strength to forgive them from your heart (Mark 11:25).

5. Personal intercession

Pray for the following:

  • God strengthens your relationship with Him, and He refreshes your confidence in His love for you as your Heavenly Father
  • You would love yourself as a child of God, free, forgiven and without condemnation (Romans 8:1).
  • You would love others as Jesus loves them, and you would boldly serve others in love as God gives you opportunity to do so.
  • You experience God’s inexpressible joy and peace (1 Peter 1:8 and Romans 15:13): we all need these!
  • Any specific points that you need today.

6. Praying Scripture

Read today’s passage, from Mark 16:

[15] Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. [16] Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. [17] And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; [18] they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Jesus’ intention is that His disciples will do remarkable things that glorify Him and make the reality of His wonderful and transformational kingdom known. Jesus wants many saved, baptised, delivered from oppression and danger, filled with new gifts and to see God’s healing break out.

What is God showing you or talking to you about from that passage: for instance, what strikes you as unusual, interesting, provocative, or puzzling? Ask God and pray about those things.

7. Intercession: Naturally Supernatural

Pray at that start of this prayer week that:

  • The church will be even bolder in sharing and preaching the Good News of Jesus to those in our town and the surrounding area.
  • For 2021 to be the best year in the history of the King’s Church in High Wycombe for the number of people being saved and then baptised.
  • The Holy Spirit will move in the church so we would be filled with Him and receive powerful gifts.
  • Ask for God to give you the gift of tongues for the first time, or to fill you again and fortify this important and joyous gift
  • We will see signs and wonders that draw people to Jesus, with many inside and outside the church healed of physical ailments, sickness, injuries, psychological wounds and mental health conditions.

8. Thanksgiving

Write down 5 things you can thank God for. Consider each one in turn. Thank Him again. If you have time, think of another 5 things and thank Him again!

9. Intercession for others

Identify three people on your BLESS list (a BLESS list is a list of people close to us, like friends, family, neighbours and colleagues, who do not yet know Jesus as Lord and Saviour).

Pray that:

  • God deepens your relationship with them and gives you opportunities to serve them well
  • God provokes them to openness to Him
  • God uses you to signpost them to Him
  • Jesus wonderfully saves them.

10. Intercede for nations

Pick a nation: it could be the UK, it could be your birth nation or that of your parents, it could be a nation that is close to your heart, or it could be Nepal where our brothers and sisters in King’s Church Kathmandu are fearlessly spreading the Gospel.

Pray for:

  • the Gospel to be preached and received in that nation
  • many to be saved and then filled with the Holy Spirit
  • supernatural signs and wonders to break out in that nation that draw people to Jesus and glorify Him
  • a spotless Church to rise up in that nation
  • righteous government in that nation inspired by the love and fear of the Lord, and His loving wisdom

11. Intercede for the church

Pray for God’s blessing on two or three of the following and those who lead them:

  • King’s Kids: our children’s work up to the age of 11
  • King’s Youth: for those aged 11-18
  • Our small groups: for powerful times together and strong support of one another in these restrictive and challenging times
  • Our outreach and social action works: Azalea (working with commercially sexually exploited women), CAP (our Christians Against Poverty debt relief centre), English as a Second Language (ESL) groups, Little Stars (parent and toddler group), King’s Table (serving those wrestling with life-controlling addictions and homelessness)
  • The eldership, leadership and staff teams in the church: wisdom, unity, inspiration and courage
  • Focus: our group for those in retirement
  • Alpha: for many to join and encounter Jesus’ love and salvation: it starts on 4th May
  • Our worship and technical teams who serve us so well every single week
  • Another church in High Wycombe or the surrounding area

12. Reflection

Write down anything that God has spoken to you. You can send in your reflections, thoughts, words of encouragement, prophetic words by clicking here.

Contemplation

“On earth, as it is in heaven”

1. Praise and Worship (5 mins)

Praise and Worship. Today we are considering the spiritual practice of contemplation. Take some time to contemplate this verse. Read through it several times, then pick a part of the verse and praise God using the words in the verse. If you have time move onto the other part of the verse.

Suggested song: How Great is our God by Chris Tomlin

 2. Confession (5 mins)

Confess anything that comes to mind.  This will enable you to pray without anything coming between you and God.

3. Praying Scripture (5 mins)

Take some time to read through the following scripture.

Psalm 8 1-4

1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

Now just wait, and allow God to speak to you.  Silence can be hard to start with, but regularly finding time to sit in silence before God, contemplating Him and His word, is an incredibly powerful way to meet with Him.

——— New to Prayer finishes here, everyone else keeps going ———-

4. Personal Intercession (5 mins)

As we come to the end of the weekreflect on how you have grown in prayer.  Ask God what a next step could be for you.  Committing to regular times of prayer, doing the prayer course, attending the church prayer meeting, or a prayerfocused small group?

  4. For Christian students to be a light to their peers and their faith to be upheld and strengthened.

Focus (over 50s ministry):

  1. God’s peace and protection over them.

  3. The leadership team would feel loved, refreshed, encouraged, and empowered.

 6. Intercede for our local area  (5 mins)

Pray that many in our town would be drawn to Jesus, that they would watch our online broadcasts and discover God’s beauty and His offer of salvation.  Pray for the Police in our town: good health, integrity, and encouragement from the community.

——— Growing in Prayer finishes here, everyone else keeps going ———-

7. Waiting on the Lord (5 mins)

Take some time to still your thoughts and sit before the Lord in silence again. Did you have any words from God for our ministries or town?  Write these down and let us know

8. Intercede for the nations  (5 mins)

Ask God which nation he would like you to focus on today.  It could be your home nation or a nation that you have close links with, a place you have prayed for before or know people in.  Pray that God would give the leaders of that nation wisdom to lead well, especially in this testing time.  Pray for the church of that nation to flourish and to embody Jesus in that culture.  Pray that many would seek God and that they would come to know Him there.  Listen to what God has to say about that nation and pray about it.

9. Thanksgiving  (5 mins)

Thank God for all the natural beauty that you are able to enjoy in our area.  Thank him that we get to appreciate him in nature and also through spending time in prayer with Him.  Thank Him for the things you have learnt about prayer this week.

10. Listening  (5 mins)

Ask God what he would like to speak to you about prayer and spending time with Him.  Then sit and wait and listen.

11. Praise (5 mins)

Unanswered prayer

“Your will be done”

1. Praise and Worship (5 mins)

Today we are thinking about unanswered prayer.  In the psalm we will reflect on later the writer speaks about the things he is struggling with before he reminds himself to put his hope in God.  Today bring the things that you are struggling with before God and lay them before him.  He longs to hear how you are really doing, He is big enough to cope with your hurts and sorrows.  As you finish remind yourself to put your hope in God despite these things.

Suggested song: Praise you in this storm – Casting Crowns

2. Confession (5 mins)

Confess anything that comes to mind.  This will enable you to pray without anything coming between you and God.

3. Praying Scripture (5 mins)

Take some time to read through the following scripture.

Psalm 42: 1-5

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One[d
with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Saviour and my God.

Read this Psalm at least twice. Are you struggling in particular areas at the moment?  Lay them before God and then remind yourself of all the ways he has met with you, and how also he has met your needs in the past.

5. Personal Intercession (5 mins)

3. Praying Scripture (5 mins)

Take some time to read through the following scripture.

Mark 4:26-29

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain-first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

Spend some time reading this scripture and the think about the images used within it.  Imagine the farmer scattering seed and the process of the seed growing.  Picture the gradual growth.  Rejoice in the eventual harvest.  Ask God to show you how He is doing this in those around you.

Adoration

“Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be your name”

Today we are going to spend our time focusing on God and who He is.

1. Praise and Worship (5 mins)

To hallow means to ‘honour as holy’ Spend some time now giving God the honour and glory.  Use songs, listen to music, speak out words of praise.

Suggested song: Good Good Father (click on link)

2. Confession (5 mins)

Confess anything that comes to mind that is wrong or sinful in your life.  This will enable you to pray without barriers coming between you and God. Remember ‘there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus’ (Romans 8:1), so once you have confessed leave it with God.

3. Praying Scripture (5 mins)

Take some time to read through the following scripture. Read it through at least twice, and then pick one verse to focus on and pray out of this. For example you could focus on his ‘mighty acts’ in the Bible, or God’s activity in your life, or anything, and praise him for them.

Psalm 145

I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will praise you
and extol your name for ever and ever.

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.
They speak of the glorious splendour of your majesty –
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

They tell of the power of your awesome works –
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
7 They celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

——— New to Prayer finishes here, everyone else keep going ———-

4. Waiting on the Lord (5 mins)

Take some time to still your thoughts and sit before the Lord in silence. Ask him to speak to you through this passage. 5 minutes might seem a long time but wait it out!

5. Personal Intercession (5 mins)

Pray for yourself as you begin this prayer challenge: Ask Father God how much time He wants you to commit to prayer this week. Ask Him to increase your desire to spend time with Him and to reveal more of His character to you. Thank Him for the wonderful works of salvation He has done in your life.

6. Intercede for our church ministries (5 mins)

For our church: Pray that every member of the church would get involved in some way in the prayer challenge.  Pray that as we seek to get closer to God individually we would also be strengthened as a body. Pray for those who lead the prayer and prophetic ministries in the church.  Pray that God would give them inspiration as they seek to hear from Him, and His power to see Him heal the sick, bind up the brokenhearted and see the lost saved and filled with the Holy Spirit.

——— Growing in Prayer finishes here, everyone else keep going ———-

7. Intercede for our local area (5 mins)

Pray for those in our town to have their eyes opened to the beauty and wonder of Jesus. Pray that ‘all people may know of His mighty acts and the glorious splendour of His kingdom’. Pray for Azalea as they reach out to commercially sexually exploited women in the town.  Pray for:

10.Listening (5 mins)

Ask God what He has to say to you. Sometimes we are so busy talking to God that we forget that he has a lot to say to us too. Sit in silence before God and listen to what he has to say to you.  If you are not used to this it can be hard at first but persevere for the full 5 minutes.  Consider writing down any distractions and anything that you hear God say.

11. Praise (5 mins)

We started with praise and we end with praise.  Thank God for speaking to you today.  Thank Him for His scriptures and the many other ways He speaks to us.  Thank Him that He is a God who draws near to us and who loves to spend time with us in prayer.

12. Reflection (5 mins)

Finish by writing down anything that God has spoken to you from today’s bible readings, or any personal words God has given you. Reflect on what he has said and ask if there is anything that you need to do in response.

We’d love to hear your thoughts, and your experience, in response to Joel’s talk on Sunday 10 January (If you’ve not see the talk, watch it here).

In these strange times, we’re working to find creative ways to help you connect into community.

The Big Church Read is a new initiative, encouraging Christians to read ‘The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry’, a book about staying emotionally healthy in a busy world, offering a challenging but compassionate response to busyness, based on the way of life Jesus offered his disciples.

We’re setting up mini groups of around 6-8 people to read the book together – groups small enough to perhaps meet in person if they wish to do so. The groups last just six weeks from the start of October.
Fill in this short form, and we’ll connect you to a group.

Everyone will need a copy of the book. You can buy a hard copy here or audio and Kindle versions are available at Amazon.
